The National Anthem of the Kingdom of Portugal (1834–1910): "Hino da Carta" [Instrumental]

The “Hino da Carta” (Portuguese for “Hymn of the Charter” ) was the national anthem of the Kingdom of Portugal during the constitutional monarchy. It was written and composed by Dom Pedro IV of Portugal, who was also Emperor Pedro I of Brazil. The music was created in Brazil in 1821, during the period when liberal and constitutional ideas were becoming increasingly important in Portugal. The earliest known date associated with the composition is 31 March 1821. The hymn was originally known as the Hino Constitucional (Portuguese for “Constitutional Hymn” ). It became associated with the Constitutional Charter of 1826, which Dom Pedro IV granted to Portugal after becoming king following the death of his father, King João VI. Because of this connection, it became known as the Hino da Carta. Its lyrics praised the Fatherland, the King, the people, religion, and the constitutional system, reflecting the political ideals of Portugal’s Liberal period. In May 1834, during the reign of Queen Maria II, the Hino da Carta was officially adopted as Portugal’s national anthem. It was performed at public and state ceremonies and became an important musical symbol of the constitutional monarchy. Interestingly, although the hymn was connected with the 1826 Charter, it had actually been composed several years before the Charter was granted. The anthem remained associated with Portugal’s monarchy for more than seven decades. Its words emphasized loyalty to the King and the constitutional order, with the famous recurring idea of celebrating the “happy Constitution.” The melody also became influential beyond official ceremonies, with different versions and adaptations appearing in Portuguese musical and political life. The Hino da Carta ceased to be Portugal’s national anthem following the Republican Revolution of 5 October 1910, which ended the monarchy and established the Portuguese Republic. It was subsequently replaced by A Portuguesa, which remains Portugal’s national anthem today.
