And so we Begin Again : A summary of Chapter 12 2. 2:17– On why Basil is such a good friend, why we love him, and why we still hate Dorian. We also discuss what makes a good friend, the Queer subtext again, and discuss how Dorian corrupts men and women (but mostly men). Michelle points out that there’s something a little. . . . special . . . about the way that Dorian corrupts the men. And Basil, loyal friend that he is, refuses to believe it 3. 7:16–Basil . . . you’re in danger Girl! Michelle and Claudine debate Dorian’s state of mind as he lures Basil up to the attic. We may not agree about his state of mind. But we can agree that he’s a piece of sh•t. And that’s the important thing. Claudine keep insisting that Dorian’s a vampire and makes a Twilight reference that Michelle does NOT appreciate. Claudine is tickled by this . . . and probably going to hell for it. Worth it. 4. 14:59– We get to chapter 13 and discuss why we didn’t give it a title, and why killing Basil is such a tragedy for us, such a tragedy for Dorian, and such a tragedy for Art. We discuss how the death of Basil is symbolic for the death of the promise of art and beauty in the world and how it didn’t even need to happen! Claudine introduces a different set up for these chapters: Reading excerpt and discussing the quotes. Because we’re too sad to do anything else. 5. 21:46–Claudine reads the first excerpt: The creepy way that Dorian lures Basil to his death. We discuss the creepy portrait and then 6. 26:02–Michelle picks up the next excerpt which describes how Basil is horrified and tries to rationalize what the hell he’s even seeing. Then Michelle explains why she’s a little annoyed with Basil. Claudine and Michelle debate what Basil felt for Dorian, and get into a discussion as to what it must feel like to be betrayed by the person you thought you knew – and what it must feel like that their face is the last thing you see before you die. 7. 34:34–Claudine reads the final excerpt, which describes the way that Basil dies. A Christ comparison is made. And sadness is had. 8. 37:41–The conclusion of a very sad chapter in the life of Basil Hallward and the beginning of a new Chapter in Dorian’s life. We also end this chapter on a bit of a mystery: Who the HELL is Alan Campbell? We discuss Dorian’s alibi and how, if this were a true crime, we’d be like: Dorian is totally gonna get away with this. It CAN’T be! (WE NEED YOU JIM!)
