1967 Brabham BT11: The Last Man to Race F1 Alone, With One Car, One Van and One Mechanic

In January nineteen sixty seven, the Formula One field arrived at Kyalami the way it always did, factory teams, spare engines in crates, mechanics by the crew. One entry did not fit. A single three year old Brabham, entered by its own driver, hauled across a continent in a Volkswagen van and kept alive by one full time mechanic. The man was Bob Anderson, a motorcycle racer who had beaten everyone except John Surtees around the Isle of Man, then bought one car and took on the factories of Europe with his wife keeping the times. That afternoon he finished fifth in a world championship Grand Prix, ahead of machinery worth more than everything he owned. This is the story of the last true privateer, the podium at Zeltweg that kept the little team alive, the win at Kumalo, the works seat that was finally within reach, and the wet test day at Silverstone in August nineteen sixty seven where the whole improbable story ended.
