It's 45°C in the Persian desert, 400 CE, and there is a block of solid ice sitting inside a mudbrick tower. No electricity. No refrigerant. No mountain snow. This ice was made right here, on purpose, using nothing but mud, shape, and a piece of physics most people alive today have never heard of despite experiencing it every clear night of their lives. In this video we go through the entire system the Persians built over a thousand years: the yakhchal towers that could hold ice through a summer of 40°C+ heat, the qanats that moved water underground for kilometers with zero pumps, the physics of radiative cooling that let a shallow pool freeze on a "warm" night, and the ice economy that grew out of it — medicine, sherbet, food preservation, and a very real gap between what the rich and the poor got to keep cold.
