Sai Baba's early life, including his birth name, place of birth, and date of birth, are unknown. Most information about his life is derived from a book called the Shri Sai Satcharita, written by one of his devotees.
According to these accounts, Sai Baba arrived in the village of Shirdi, in the Ahmadnagar district of Maharashtra, India, when he was about 16 years old. He lived an extremely simple and ascetic life, spending his time in a dilapidated mosque (which he named Dwarkamai) and meditating under a neem tree. He wore a simple, torn kafni (robe) and a cloth cap, and he begged for food daily. Over time, he began to attract followers, who called him "Sai" (a Persian term for saint) and "Baba" (a Hindi term for father). He remained in Shirdi until his death in 1918.
Teachings and Philosophy
Sai Baba's teachings were not based on any specific religious scripture but focused on moral virtues, inner peace, and devotion to God and the guru. He gave no distinction based on religion, caste, or creed.
Key aspects of his philosophy include:
Sabka Malik Ek ("One God governs all"): This well-known epigram highlights his belief in the unity of God. He encouraged his followers to pray, chant God's name, and read holy scriptures from their own religions. He often quoted from both Hindu scriptures (like the Bhagavad Gita) and the Qur'an.
Devotion and Faith (Shraddha and Saburi): He emphasized the importance of unconditional faith in the guru (Shraddha) and patience (Saburi).
Moral Code: He preached a moral code that included love, forgiveness, helping others, charity, and contentment. He criticized attachment to perishable things and emphasized the importance of self-realization.
