What happens when you turn 60 and realize that the career you’ve spent 40 years building no longer defines what you want from life? Finding purpose after 60, navigating career transitions, and discovering your identity beyond work can raise some surprisingly difficult questions. I recently turned 60, and I’ve been reflecting on what it means to find fulfillment, purpose, and meaning in the second half of life. For nearly 40 years, I focused on building a successful career. I worked in technology, advanced into executive leadership, and eventually became a Chief Marketing Officer before leaving corporate America to start my own consulting business. Looking back, I realize much of my professional journey happened on autopilot. One opportunity led to another, and I rarely stopped to ask whether I was following the path I actually wanted. Now I’m asking a different question: What’s next? Finding Purpose and Meaning After 60 I’m not ready to retire, and I still enjoy working. But I’m realizing that career success and professional achievement aren’t always enough to build a fulfilling life after 60. Like many people navigating midlife transitions, approaching retirement age, or considering a second act in life, I’m reconsidering my priorities. What does success mean when career advancement matters less? How do we maintain a sense of purpose as we get older? How do we build meaningful relationships, stay relevant, and continue contributing beyond our professional careers? And perhaps most importantly, who are we when our jobs and professional titles no longer define us? Life Beyond Your Career: Introducing Beyond Expertise Beyond Expertise is a YouTube channel and podcast exploring personal growth, identity, aging, career transitions, and finding purpose in the second half of life.
