Australian clean tech company MCi Carbon has developed a world-first carbon capture and utilisation technology. This innovation captures CO2 directly from industrial flue gases and transforms it into valuable industrial products such as silica for use in concrete. On 13th October 2026, our community of practice focused on a SmartCrete CRC research collaboration developing this silica product. Event Chair Arun Arunothayan spoke to Mark Rayson (MCi Carbon) and Jerry Fu (UTS) about how the process known as mineral carbonation is producing a supplementary cementitious material to lower the embodied carbon of concrete. This free online event included a series of short presentations followed by a Q&A in which the audience joined the conversation.
