A former unified cruiserweight world champion, Gassiev had previously held the IBF and WBA titles and was returning after more than a year away from competition. 🥊 Kem Ljungquist (Denmark) – 34-year-old heavyweight who entered unbeaten at 18-0 with 11 KOs. The towering southpaw brought a major height advantage, a busy jab and straight left hand, along with experience as an IBF International heavyweight titleholder and a decorated Danish amateur who had competed at major international championships. This was a major step up against one of the division’s most experienced punchers. 🔥 Ljungquist made an impressive start, using his long jab, straight left and movement to control much of the opening four rounds while Gassiev steadily pressed forward looking to close the distance. In the fourth, a cut opened on the bridge of Gassiev’s nose as Ljungquist continued to land combinations, but the momentum began to change as increasingly heavy hooks to the body found their target. In round five, the pressure intensified before a crushing left hook to the body sent Ljungquist down. He could not beat referee Freddy Rafn’s count, bringing the contest to a dramatic knockout finish at 2:29 of the fifth round.
