Hi, I'm Waka!
This time, a day trip in Nara Japan: I rented a bike and cycled around Asuka, where Japan's first capitals once stood — listed as a World Heritage Site in 2026.
A burial chamber you can walk inside, a ceiling covered in 260 flowers, and rice terraces stacked up a hillside.

Asuka has hills — the electric one is worth it.
🚲 Why a bike
Asuka is spread out, and the sites are a few kilometres apart. A rental bike right outside the station turns the whole village into one afternoon. The staff will mark a route on a map for you.
🌸 The cosmos
2.4 million cosmos bloom at the Fujiwara Palace Site from early to late October. It's free to enter. In October there were almost no foreign visitors here — it is still very much a local place.
🏯 A World Heritage Site since 2026
Asuka and the Fujiwara capitals were added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2026. These were the capitals of Japan before Nara and Kyoto, around 1,300 to 1,400 years ago.
