Komal is in the courtyard, offering water to the sacred Tulsi plant from a small vessel; she folds her hands and begins to circumambulate the plant. Just then, Hema and Sarita are returning from their morning walk and spot Komal. Hema (48, happily): Look, Sarita, what a cultured daughter-in-law Kamala has. Sarita (50, happily): You’re right, sister; whether it’s morning prayers, kitchen duties, or serving the elders, she never misses a thing. Hema (48, happily): Yes, sister; in this day and age, only the truly lucky get a daughter-in-law who is so accomplished and virtuous. Narration: Komal finishes her circumambulation, smiles, and steps inside the house. She lights a ghee lamp in the small home shrine, prepares the Aarti (prayer) thali, and performs the ritual throughout the house. Her mother-in-law, Kamala, and father-in-law, Mahesh, are seated in the hall; Komal approaches them. Komal (24, affectionately): "Mother-in-law, Father-in-law, please accept the *aarti*." Kamala (52, happily): "May you live a long and happy life, daughter-in-law; may you always remain happily married." Mahesh (56, happily): "Stay happy always, child; may God fulfill every wish of yours." Narration: Komal places the aarti thali on the table and bends down to touch her in-laws' feet. Komal (24, happily): "Mother-in-law, let me quickly go to the kitchen and prepare breakfast for you all." Kamala (52, affectionately): "Yes, daughter-in-law; you soaked the sago pearls last night, didn't you? So, just make *sabudana khichdi*." Mahesh (56, happily): "Yes, daughter-in-law, and bring along some piping hot ginger tea as well." Narration: Just then, Aarti comes out of her room into the hall and, making a face... Aarti (20, irritably): "Sister-in-law! But I absolutely dislike *sabudana khichdi*; you know that very well." Komal (24, affectionately): "Sister-in-law, why do you worry? I know perfectly well that you like curd sandwiches. I had hung the curd in a cloth to drain last night itself, so the hung curd must be ready by now. I'll make a curd and vegetable sandwich for you." Aarti (20, happily): "Really, sister-in-law? Only the truly lucky ones get a sister-in-law like you!" Kamala (52, affectionately): "Oh Aarti, are you just going to keep flattering her with words, or will you let her go and make breakfast too?" Narration: Komal enters the kitchen with a smile and looks at the clean, tidy counter. Komal (24, happily): "It's a good thing I thoroughly cleaned the entire kitchen last night itself." Mother always used to say that Goddess Annapurna resides in a clean kitchen. Now, getting the morning chores done has become so much easier. Narration: Komal begins finely chopping fresh green chilies and onions. She lights the stove, places a pan on it, adds a little oil, and tempers it with cumin seeds. Then, she adds the soaked sago (sabudana) to the pan, mixing in turmeric, salt, and finely chopped tomatoes. Komal (24, happy): Now, I’ll cover it and let it cook on a low flame; it will steam-cook perfectly in a little while. Narration: Komal places a vessel on the second burner and adds milk, water, tea leaves, and sugar. Next, she takes the hung curd out of the fridge and spreads it onto slices of bread. She finely chops capsicum, tomatoes, and cabbage, arranges them on the bread, places the second slice on top, and packs the sandwich. Komal (24, happy): Having three burners makes the work finish so quickly. Narration: Placing a griddle (tawa) on the third burner, Komal toasts the sandwich thoroughly until it is crispy on both sides. A short while later, she arranges a plate of sago khichdi, the hung curd sandwich, and a cup of piping hot tea on a lovely tray. She carries the tray to the living room and sets it on the dining table. Komal (24, affectionate): Ma-ji, Babu-ji, breakfast is ready; please go ahead and eat. Aarti (20, happy): Wow, Bhabhi!
