Fall asleep to one long day inside the private rooms of Henry VIII's six queens, from 1509 to 1547, at Greenwich, Hampton Court and Whitehall. Their household rules of 1526 set dinner at 11 o'clock and supper at 6, for the king's chambers and the queen's alike. A maid of honour was paid £10 a year, and one queen's wardrobe received 10,000 pins and 200 needles in a single order. And every night, between eight and nine, the queen's ushers carried something up to her bedchamber, whether the king came or not. What was it?
