To me, a song isn't just a collection of words and a tune. It’s a prayer—words of praise calling out straight from my heart to His. When I wrote Forever in the Dawn, I was thinking back to a lesson I learned when I was younger from Pastor Jeff Leahey. He used an illustration that has always stuck with me about how sin works. He talked about how trappers in Alaska used to protect livestock by setting traps in the woods. A wolf would catch the scent of blood in the air and follow it, completely unaware it was walking into a trap. When the wolf reached the spot and started to dig, it would get cut by a hidden spike in the ground. At first, it would hesitate, hurt and cautious. But the deception was so strong that it would be drawn right back to it, willing to risk the pain for what it thought was a prize. Cut by cut, the wolf eventually couldn't even tell the difference between its own blood and the meat it was hungry for. That imagery hit me because it’s such a powerful picture of sin—a poison we sometimes take to the heart as if it were life. That is what Forever in the Dawn is all about. It’s about being that wolf, caught in the cold and bleeding from choices that only brought pain. But it is also a song of praise, because it doesn't end in the trap. It’s about the moment the horizon bleeds gold, the Father's mercy breaks through, and you realize you're finally walking home to His grace.
