Colorado has a desert. An actual desert, with the tallest sand dunes in North America, sitting at the base of 14,000 foot mountains. I spent time exploring Great Sand Dunes National Park, climbing High Dune, sledding the dunes, and hiking back to Zapata Falls just south of the park. Along the way I got into how this place actually formed, why the sand keeps recycling itself instead of blowing away, and how incredible the dark sky is here.
