S2 E5 — Coach Jill: Building Leaders, Character, and Confidence
What makes a great coach? It's not just about winning games. It's about helping kids become better people.
In this episode of *Good Kids Don't Happen By Accident*, Coach Steve sits down with Coach Jill Catanzaro, a longtime teacher, coach, mentor, and one of the most influential role models in Steve's career.
After years of working with young people, Jill has learned that leadership isn't something we're simply born with. It's something we can teach, practice, and develop—one choice at a time.
Steve and Jill talk about their shared experiences using Lead 'Em Up, a leadership development program that helped them teach kids lessons that go far beyond the basketball court. Jill shares the story of a quiet player who found her voice, grew in confidence, and eventually became a leader her teammates could look up to.
They also explore some of the most important lessons parents and coaches can teach:
🏀 *Leadership is more than being in charge.* Kids need opportunities to practice communication, encourage others, and take responsibility.
💪 *Give kids a safe place to fail.* Failure is part of growing up. Children need adults who let them experience disappointment, learn from mistakes, and get back up.
❤️ *Accountability and unconditional love belong together.* Kids need to understand that their choices have consequences while knowing they can always turn to the adults who love them.
👥 *The people around our kids matter.* Jill shares a lesson from her own father about the influence of the five people we spend the most time with—and why parents should pay attention to their children's friendships.
Jill also reflects on her own parents, the coaches who helped shape her, raising four boys, and what she hopes her former players remember most about her.
One of her most meaningful messages is that children may not remember everything we taught them, but they will remember how we made them feel.
This is a conversation about leadership, parenting, character, and the lasting impact adults can have on young people.
