Three Japanese words that talk to somebody with no name: one apologises to a bowl of rice, one threatens you with a punishment that nobody sends, and one says thank you without ever saying to whom. もったいない (mottainai) is not about saving money. 勿体 is what a thing actually is — rice is food — and mottainai says the thing is not being what it is. ばち当たり (bachiatari) says a punishment is going to hit you, using the same verb as being hit by rain, or by a winning lottery ticket. お陰さま (okagesama) thanks a shade: the shelter of someone you never name. Along the way: the funerals Japan holds for sewing needles, the medieval tale of tools that come back angry after a hundred years, the television ghost of 1982, the eight million gods you cannot name, and the four million people who walked to Ise in 1830 to say thank you to nobody in particular.
