In a remote observatory, there’s no one to cover the telescopes at the end of the night, and no one to take flat frames by hand. Yet both are essential: uncovered optics collect dust and humidity, and without flats your images keep every dust shadow and all the vignetting.
In this video, we’re at the PL Space Center of PrimaLuceLab, inside our DUAL-PRO Observatory Station, where our mount carries a Celestron EdgeHD 14" and a Celestron RASA 11. We install ALTO motorized telescope covers and GIOTTO flat field generators on both telescopes, so the observatory can protect its optics and take flats with nobody there.
We also talk about something many people underestimate in remote observatories: cable management. GIOTTO connects directly to ALTO, so from ALTO you only need one USB cable and one 12V power cable to the control computer, in our case an EAGLE installed right on the telescope.
