Mukden, 1905: the battle that broke the Tsar. In February and March 1905, about half a million men fought across the frozen plains of Manchuria in one of the largest land battles the world had yet seen, the climax of the Russo-Japanese War. This animated map documentary begins with Japan's surprise attack on Port Arthur, Russia's struggle to supply its army along the Trans-Siberian Railway, the siege of 203 Metre Hill, and Bloody Sunday at the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. Then the battle on the map: Field Marshal Ōyama Iwao bends five Japanese armies into a crescent around Mukden, feints in the eastern hills to draw in Aleksey Kuropatkin's reserves, and sends Nogi Maresuke's Third Army around the Russian western flank toward the railway. We follow the failed Russian counterattacks, the order to retreat, and a paradox: Japan lost more men killed, yet Russia lost the battle and soon the war. From Tsushima and the Treaty of Portsmouth to the Potemkin mutiny and the October Manifesto, this is the story of how a defeat in China shook Nicholas II's empire.
