Germany is sending PATRIOT missiles to Ukraine as Europe moves to strengthen Ukrainian air defenses before winter — and Ukraine is now working through its allies to secure nearly 1,000 Patriot interceptor missiles.
The latest Germany-Ukraine military aid announcement could become one of the most important air-defense developments of the Russia-Ukraine war. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius confirmed that Germany is providing Patriot interceptors from Bundeswehr stocks as Ukraine prepares for another winter of Russian missile and drone attacks against its cities, power grid and critical infrastructure.
But Germany is only part of the story. Britain, Norway, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Lithuania and Estonia are also increasing military support for Ukraine, including Patriot missiles, air-defense weapons, drones, artillery ammunition and funding for Ukrainian defense production.
Ukraine’s biggest problem has never simply been detecting Russian missiles — it has been having enough high-end interceptors to destroy them. Patriot air-defense systems and PAC-3 interceptors remain among Ukraine’s most important weapons against Russian ballistic missiles. Now Kyiv says it is working through allied countries to contract nearly 1,000 Patriot missiles.
For Vladimir Putin, that could create a much bigger problem. Russia has repeatedly exploited shortages in Ukraine’s air defenses while launching missiles and drones against Ukrainian infrastructure. If Ukraine enters winter with more Patriot missiles, more air-defense ammunition, more drones and significantly greater European military support, Moscow’s ability to overwhelm Ukrainian defenses could become much harder.
In this Power Faultlines report, we break down Germany’s Patriot missile decision, Ukraine’s push for nearly 1,000 Patriot interceptors, NATO and European military aid, Russia’s missile campaign, PAC-3 interceptors, Ukraine’s air-defense shortage, the Ukraine Defense Contact Group and why the coming winter could become a critical phase of the Russia-Ukraine war.
