Learn the sequence for starting a peripheral IV: prepare and prime the line, choose and clean a site, insert and advance the catheter, connect the tubing, and assess the site. This UAF HEART demonstration includes a supplies checklist and quick checks on bevel direction and sharps disposal. Read the drop factor on the set package. Check the entire primed line for air and allow the antiseptic to dry completely before insertion. Open RN specifies a 10- to 15-degree insertion angle; ECU gives a 10- to 30-degree range. Both differ from the 45-degree angle stated in the demonstration. Open RN and ECU place tourniquet release before connecting the line; this demonstration connects first. The on-screen guidance identifies these differences. After starting flow, assess the site for swelling, pain, or redness. Follow your agency protocol and the catheter manufacturer's instructions for technique, angle and depth.
