Evan thinks AI will take over drafting within a year. Here's what architects still have to offer. -------- In this episode, Evan Troxel and Cormac Phalen start with the '90s and end up at the question every firm is facing now: what is your value once AI can draft? Evan is fresh off Autodesk University in Las Vegas, where he co-led a standing-room-only workshop called Build Your Firm's AI Adoption Plan. He walks through the three pillars behind it: capability, alignment, and accountability. People rarely think about all three, and people are a big part of every one of them. The conversation gets into why AI is a crutch when you trust it blindly and a tool when you vet it. Evan points out that a firm's documents and models are the results of decisions, not the decisions themselves, and almost no firm records why it made them. Cormac shares how he uses Gemini as a check while writing a spec for a material he'd never specified, and how it gave him questions to ask rather than a finished answer. Evan also predicts that AI will be able to handle most drafting within a year, and Cormac remembers the draftsmen of the '90s. They land on a simple answer for what to do with the time you get back: care more. This conversation is essential listening for practicing architects, project managers, and firm leaders who want to decide, on purpose, where they stand on AI before the decision gets made for them. What you'll learn in this episode: • The capability, alignment, and accountability framework for building an AI adoption plan • Why firms' drawings and models record the results of decisions without the reasoning behind them • How to use AI as a tool and vet its output rather than treat it as a crutch • What drafting looks like when AI takes over layouts, schedules, dimensions, and annotations • Why the answer to "do more" with AI may be to care more • How asking "why architecture?" helps you choose how you want to practice, with or without AI Chapters: 00:00 What makes you feel old 02:13 Grunge, flannel, and the '90s 05:41 Napster, burned CDs, and coasters 09:07 Car stereos worth more than the car 13:29 Analog tools still on the desk 17:50 Autodesk University in Vegas 22:09 Build Your Firm's AI Adoption Plan 25:06 Is AI a crutch? 30:20 Copy-paste details and garbage in, garbage out 33:14 Where the architect's value lives 36:15 What happened to the draftsmen 37:57 Productivity porn and the bloated model 40:10 Care more, and don't wait for permission 42:34 Why architecture? 46:59 Hand sketches, Gemini, and canary trace 50:32 A GFRC sundial and being replaceable 53:19 The genie's not going back in 👍 Like this episode if you've ever wondered whether your job is drafting or design 💬 Drop a comment with the one task you'd hand to AI tomorrow, and the one you'd never give up 🔔 Subscribe for more conversations on architecture, practice, and the built environment 🌐 https://archispeakpodcast.com/episode... #Architecture #AIinAEC #ArtificialIntelligence #AutodeskUniversity #ArchitecturePractice #Archispeak
