“The Psalm Beneath the Cross” is a powerful and reflective Christian song connecting the words of Psalm 22 with the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Beginning with David’s ancient cry and carrying it forward to Calvary, the song explores how words written centuries before the cross echo through the suffering, mockery, divided garments, and final hours of Christ.
The song begins with one of Scripture’s most striking connections: “My God, My God, why hast Thou left me?” From there, the story moves between David’s Psalm and the scene beneath the cross. Mocking voices surround the righteous sufferer. Heads are shaken. Garments are divided and lots are cast. His strength fades and His mouth grows dry. What David expressed poetically generations earlier finds powerful echoes in the Gospel accounts of Calvary.
But Psalm 22 does not remain in suffering, and neither does this song. Its final movement turns toward hope, the nations, future generations, and the reign of God. The darkness of the cross gives way to the victory of Christ. The song follows that scarlet thread from David’s ancient cry to Calvary and ultimately to the declaration that suffering and death would not have the final word. The Lamb who suffered and died is alive.

THE PSALM BENEATH THE CROSS
A thousand years before the nails
Before the cross, before the grave
A shepherd cried beneath the stars
And sang of One who came to save
“My God, My God,
why hast Thou left me?”
Through David’s song
the sorrow cried
Then centuries passed
and on the cross
Those words were spoken
as He died
There was a Psalm
beneath the cross
Written long before the cost
Mocking tongues
and garments torn
A righteous One
despised and scorned
David sang the mystery
Christ revealed at Calvary
There was a Psalm
beneath the cross
Where the Lamb
would bear our loss
“They shake their heads
and laugh at me
He trusted God
let God draw near”
The words once written
in the Psalm
Were spoken where
the Lamb could hear
“They cast their lots
upon my clothes”
While soldiers watched
beneath the sky
His strength was gone
His mouth was dry
Yet still the Lamb
was lifted high
There was a Psalm
beneath the cross
Written long before the cost
Mocking tongues
and garments torn
A righteous One
despised and scorned
David sang the mystery
Christ revealed at Calvary
There was a Psalm
beneath the cross
Where the Lamb
would bear our loss
But Psalm Twenty Two
would not end
In mocking tongues
or darkest night
It spoke of nations
turning home
Of generations
seeing light
The ends of earth
would seek the LORD
And those unborn
would hear His name
The stone would roll
the grave would yield
And death would bow
before His reign
There was a Psalm
beneath the cross
But the grave
could hold Him not
From David’s cry
to Calvary
A scarlet thread
through history
“My God, My God,”
the Savior cried
While darkness covered
earth and sky
But sorrow would not have
the final word
The Lamb who suffered
The Lamb who died
Rose in glory
Alive
