As an American, there are certain things you grow up thinking are completely normal… until you leave America and realize the rest of the world is looking at you like, “You guys do WHAT?” 😂🇺🇸 Today I’m reacting to The Present Past’s video exploring American patriotism and why the way Americans display national pride can seem so unusual — especially from a European perspective. The flags EVERYWHERE. The Pledge of Allegiance in schools. Standing for the national anthem. Patriotic songs. Military flyovers at sporting events. Putting the flag on absolutely EVERYTHING. And the general idea that being “proud to be American” becomes part of your identity from an incredibly young age. Growing up in the United States, a lot of this didn’t feel particularly strange to me because it was simply part of everyday life. It wasn’t until I spent years living outside the U.S. that I started looking back at certain American traditions and thinking… Okay. Maybe this IS a little weird. 😂 But I’m especially interested in the history behind it. Where did this incredibly visible version of American patriotism come from? How much of it developed naturally through American history? How much was deliberately encouraged? And why does patriotism in many European countries often look so different? Obviously, patriotism exists throughout Europe too, and attitudes toward national identity vary enormously between countries. But the WAY Americans express patriotism can feel particularly intense when viewed from the outside. That’s what makes this such an interesting topic to explore. And I want to know what YOU think! 🇪🇺 Europeans: What part of American patriotism seems strangest to you? 🇺🇸 Americans: Did any of this feel completely normal to you growing up? 🌎 Everyone else: How does patriotism work in your country? And where do YOU think the line is between patriotism and nationalism?
