The Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has adopted a historic resolution referring the matter to the United Nations Security Council, citing Iran's failure to fulfill its nuclear obligations. This step marks the agency's first severe diplomatic resolution against Iran in the past two decades, escalating tensions between Western nations and Tehran to an unprecedented level. During the vote held by the 35-nation Board of Governors, the resolution was approved with 23 votes in favor, while Russia, China, and Niger opposed it, and the remaining eight countries abstained. The catalyst for this decision is Iran's failure to provide sufficient explanation regarding uranium deposits found at undeclared sites and its restriction of the agency's inspections at nuclear facilities within the country. Furthermore, Iran has accumulated over 440 kilograms of uranium enriched up to 60 percent, which, if processed further, is sufficient to build up to 10 nuclear weapons, causing profound concern. While referring the matter to the Security Council paves the way for potential additional international sanctions against Iran, Iran’s close allies Russia and China are expected to use their veto power in the council to block any stringent measures.
