Beyond university gates | HKMU | Pacific Asia: Tourism With Purpose

How can applied learning help shape the next generation of responsible tourism leaders? In this film for Pacific Asia: Tourism with Purpose, Hong Kong Metropolitan University explores how students are learning to connect tourism education with community development, cultural heritage and sustainable destination stewardship. Following Chan Hawley, a student pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration with Honours in International Hospitality and Attractions Management, the film highlights HKMU’s learn-by-doing approach to tourism education. Through fieldwork, students engage directly with local communities, heritage sites and real-world tourism challenges, building the skills and perspective needed to support more responsible visitor experiences. The film also features Dr Louisa Lee, Course Leader for Responsible Tourism and Community Development, who explains how students are encouraged to critically analyse the relationship between tourism, local cultures, residents, visitors and the city itself. From a beloved noodle shop in Sham Shui Po to Hong Kong SAR’s outlying islands, students explore how tourism can support intangible cultural heritage, ecotourism and more sustainable urban development. As Hong Kong advances its tourism development priorities and long-term climate goals, HKMU is aligning its curriculum with public policy, industry needs and emerging opportunities across the visitor economy.
