Antarctic krill is one of the most abundant wild animals on Earth, yet most people have never eaten it.
Deep in the freezing Southern Ocean, this tiny shrimp-like creature feeds whales, penguins, seals, fish, squid, and seabirds. It gathers in enormous swarms, glows in the dark, survives months without food, and even helps move carbon from the atmosphere into the deep ocean.
But despite its huge numbers, krill is almost impossible for humans to eat easily. After it dies, its own enzymes begin breaking down its body within hours. Its shell can also contain high levels of fluoride, which may leak into the meat after death. That means krill must be processed extremely fast, before it turns into mush or becomes unsafe.
This is the strange story of why the animal that feeds the largest creatures on Earth is not really food for us.
In this video, we explore how Antarctic krill supports the entire Southern Ocean food web, why whales depend on it, how krill helps trap carbon, and why overfishing and melting sea ice could threaten one of the most important creatures on the planet.
Watch till the end, because this tiny animal may change the way you see the ocean forever.
