Stockholm Suburb Walk: Gamla Enskede’s most charming streets

In the summer of 1908, the first house in Gamla Enskede was completed. This marked the beginning of a type of urban development entirely new to Sweden—the garden city—planned by the municipality on city-owned land and based on the ideal of the single-family home. A fundamental principle of the development was that continuous three-story residential buildings would form a ring along the main roads, with terraced houses and detached single-family homes situated in the areas within. Most of the houses are architect-designed standard models, such as the so-called "Enskede Villa." This was a model home for industrial workers, introduced by the Municipal Land Board at the 1909 Stockholm Exhibition; around twenty of these villas were built. The intention was for the area to consist primarily of terraced houses, similar to those in English garden cities; however, this form of housing was uncommon in Sweden, and few people wished to live that way. Of the 300 planned terraced houses, only 37 were built—arranged in six rows along Margaretavägen—and as they could not be sold, they had to be rented out instead.
