Are super shoes actually worth it for a slower, heavier, middle-aged runner? I tested the Nike Alphafly 3 against the Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 3 using 8 × 1 km repetitions with four-minute recoveries. TEST FORMAT Reps 1–2: Nike Alphafly 3 Reps 3–4: Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 3 Reps 5–6: Nike Alphafly 3 Reps 7–8: Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 3 RESULTS Nike Alphafly 3 average: 4:49.05/km at 166.2 bpm Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 3 average: 4:49.35/km at 165.5 bpm The Alphafly was technically 0.30 seconds per kilometre faster on average, while the Puma produced the fastest individual repetition at 4:43.89/km. Real conclusion: there was no meaningful performance winner. The differences were tiny, so comfort, stability, fit and how each shoe feels may matter more than the stopwatch for runners like me. Which would you choose—and what do you look for in a carbon-plated racing shoe? Let me know your age, weight and pace in the comments.
