The house is still warm. You find the lantern and somebody jokes that it will probably be back on by supper. Then supper passes and it is not back on. Around nine you notice the floor. By eleven you can see your breath in the hallway. By two in the morning the house has gone properly cold and every one of you is lying awake in a bed that will not warm up. That is when people do foolish things. That is the hour when a man brings a charcoal grill into his kitchen, and every winter some of them do not wake up from it. I am Elias Yoder. I farm in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. My house has never been tied into the public power company, so a night like that is simply a night to us. Here are seven things we do that cost nothing at all, and not one of them involves a flame. First the hard part, and I will not soften it. Never burn anything indoors that was not built and vented to be burned indoors. Not charcoal, not a camp stove, not a grill, not a propane heater meant for a garage, not an oven left open with the gas on, and not a burner improvised out of a can. Every one puts out a poison you cannot see or smell, and it does not warn you, it just makes you sleepy. A proper stove with a proper chimney is another matter and always has been. Then the reframe that makes the rest easy. You are trying to heat a house. Stop. You cannot heat a house without power and you will exhaust yourself failing at it. What you can do completely, tonight, with what is in your linen closet, is keep the people warm. My grandfather set flat stones into the edge of the fire after supper and pulled them out with the tongs, wrapped each in a piece of old blanket, and handed them round, one for each bed. I asked him once why he did not build the fire bigger and warm the whole place. He said a house cannot be warm. Only a person can be warm. Somebody shivering hard, or gone quiet and confused, or clumsy with their hands, is in real trouble, and if the shivering stops while they are still cold that is worse and not better. Get them warm, get them dry, get something hot into them, and get help. Do not wait it out and hope. Go into any hardware store in a cold snap and there is a display by the door full of things that burn. There is nothing on that display for putting your household into one room, or a stone wrapped in a blanket, or a rolled towel under a door. There is no scheme in that. The money simply runs the other way. Nobody makes a living telling you that you already own everything you need. Do this before the weather turns. Walk through your house tonight and pick the room. Find the extra blankets. Know which windows you would cover. Set aside a few flat stones where you can find them in the dark.
