🎶 Amar Jivan — a devotional song by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura, from his songbook Saranagati (Dainya Song 4), composed in Bengali in 1893. In this song, Bhaktivinoda Thakura adopts the mood of a humble Vaisnava, describing himself as steeped in sinful activity and devoid of piety — a life spent causing distress to others for one's own selfish pleasure. 🎶 Amar Jivan lyrics (1) āmāra jīvana, sadā pāpe rata, nāhiko puṇyera leṣa parere udvega, diyāchi je koto, diyāchi jīvere kleśa Meaning: My life has been constantly absorbed in wrongdoing, without a trace of virtue in it. I have caused endless anxiety and pain to other living beings. (2) nija sukha lāgi', pāpe nāhi ḍori, doyā-hīna swārtha-paro para-sukhe duḥkhī, sadā mithya-bhāṣī, para-duḥkha sukha-karo Meaning: For my own pleasure, I have never hesitated to sin — merciless and entirely self-serving. Others' happiness distresses me, I habitually speak falsehood, and I take pleasure in others' pain. (3) aśeṣa kāmanā, hṛdi mājhe mora, krodhī, dambha-parāyaṇa mada-matta sadā, viṣaye mohita, hiṁsā-garva vibhūṣaṇa Meaning: Endless desires fill my heart. I am wrathful, devoted to false pride, always intoxicated with arrogance, and bewildered by material sense objects — malice and conceit are my ornaments. (4) nidrālasya hata, sukārye virata, akārye udyogī āmi pratiṣṭha lāgiyā, śāṭhya-ācaraṇa, lobha-hata sadā kāmī Meaning: Ruined by sleep and laziness, I hold back from good deeds yet am eager for wrongdoing. For the sake of reputation I resort to deceitful conduct, and I am forever driven by greed and lust. (5) e heno durjana, saj-jana-varjita, aparādhī nirantara śubha-kārya-śūnya, sadānartha-manāḥ, nānā duḥkhe jara jara Meaning: Being such a wicked person, I am shunned by the saintly and remain a constant offender. Devoid of any auspicious activity, my mind is always drawn toward the harmful, and I am worn down by manifold sufferings. (6) bārdhakye ekhona, upāya-vihīna, tā'te dīna akiñcana bhakativinoda, prabhura caraṇe, kore duḥkha nivedana Meaning: Now in old age, with no means or resources left, utterly humbled and destitute, Bhaktivinoda places this sorrowful confession at the lotus feet of the Lord. 🙏 This devotional rendition is part of Nectar of Music — our initiative dedicated to reviving timeless bhajans and shastric verses through soulful musical offerings, dedicated to His Divine Grace Vishwa Guru A.C.
