Most of the scratches on your car aren't what you think they are. A lot of them aren't scratches at all.
Before you spend anything, run your fingernail across the mark. If it doesn't catch, the damage is inside the clear coat and a few dollars of polishing compound will remove it completely in about ten minutes. If it catches and you see grey or white underneath, no amount of rubbing will help — and this video explains exactly why.
The part almost nobody mentions: a huge share of what looks like damage is transfer marks. Paint or rubber from a pole, a shopping cart, someone's bumper, sitting on top of your clear coat rather than cut into it. Those wipe off in two minutes.
Also covered — why compound works by removing clear coat rather than filling anything, why that means you shouldn't polish your whole car every month, bumper scuffs, touch-up paint for the deep ones, and two popular hacks that fix nothing. The oil trick is a party trick. And never touch your paint with a melamine sponge.
Go do the fingernail test on the mark that's been annoying you. Tell me in the comments what yours turned out to be.
