Every great ape has 48 chromosomes. Humans have 46. So where did the missing pair go? In 1923, a respected scientist counted human chromosomes and wrote down 48. That number went into the textbooks. For over thirty years, nobody questioned it — until 1956, when a researcher diluted cells in water, spread the chromosomes apart, and counted again. Forty-six. The textbooks were wrong the whole time. But that only opened a bigger question. If we share an ancestor with chimpanzees, and they carry 48, where did two of ours go? This video follows the evidence, step by step: • The counting mistake that survived three decades • What a chromosome actually is, and why 46 is just packaging • The buried telomere caps inside human chromosome 2, at region 2q13 • The dead second centromere — a switch that was turned off forever • A family in Wuhan, where a child was born with 44 chromosomes • What Neanderthal and Denisovan DNA revealed about how old the fusion is • Why a muntjac deer with 6 chromosomes settles the whole argument The answer isn't about losing anything. Two chromosomes fused into one. Same instructions, different packaging. And that fusion is inside every cell you have — right now. 🔔Subscribe to Primal Past for more visual stories about human origins, prehistory, and the ancestors we came from. 📖 Sources & further reading are pinned in the comments. #humanevolution #chromosomes #humanorigins #prehistory #genetics
