When their own children were diagnosed with dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia and ADHD, Brandie and Dan D'Orazio went looking for a school that could support the whole child. When they couldn't find one, they built it.
In this Season 7 "Difference Makers" segment from "A World of Difference: Embracing Neurodiversity," the award-winning series produced by Beacon College and created by Darryl Owens that airs on PBS, you'll hear how The Promise School in Charleston, SC came to be.
It's a story shaped by their children, including their son Leo, whose three years and three days of life showed them what's possible when education, therapy and care come together in one place.
You'll also hear from Susan Nyman, Fellow, Tutor and Trainer with the Orton-Gillingham Academy, on the direct, explicit, multisensory approach at the heart of every classroom, and from parents whose children have found their confidence (and a love of reading) at The Promise School.
We are so grateful to Beacon College, WUCF and NG Production Films for telling our story with so much care. And to our families, teachers, therapists and students: this one is for you. 💙
