*Is He Really the Pope? The Deeper Questions Behind Sedevacantism* Since the death of Pope Pius XII in 1958, some Catholics have questioned whether his successors were legitimate popes. Others have argued that certain popes forfeited their authority through heresy. But are these really the central questions? In this episode of *Boomers’ Church*, we explore the controversy surrounding sedevacantism—and why I believe the debate often overlooks a much more fundamental issue. We begin by examining the principal arguments of contemporary sedevacantists. Then we turn to four fascinating episodes from Church history: Pope Liberius and the Arian crisis, the condemnation of Pope Honorius I, the controversies surrounding Pope John XXII, and the Great Western Schism. These historical examples reveal that disputed papal elections, accusations of heresy, and uncertainty about papal authority are hardly new. But the present crisis raises questions of an entirely different magnitude. *Can the Church's universal teaching and worship become fundamentally compromised? What does the indefectibility of the Church really mean? And who has the authority to determine whether the man recognized as pope is actually the pope?* Ultimately, I suggest that the contemporary sedevacantist controversy is not merely a juridical question about the legitimacy of individual popes. It is an ontological question about the very nature and identity of the Catholic Church. This is not an attempt to settle the sedevacantist controversy. It is an invitation to examine the deeper questions that Catholics must confront if we hope to understand—and ultimately resolve—the present crisis in the Church. ‪@eschaefer22‬ *Subscribe to All Things Traditional* for thoughtful explorations of Catholic history, theology, tradition, and the challenges facing the Church today.
