What You Built is a song for my Grandpa, Lawrence “Larry” Hoopes. He passed away in 2014, but more than eleven years later, I still carry so much of what he gave me. He taught me how to drive a manual transmission, how to handle firearms safely, how to work with my hands, how to push through fear, and—sometimes without even realizing it—how a father figure should treat a child. He was a carpenter, a Marine, a boxer, a storyteller, stubborn as hell, funny, protective, and one of the most important people in my life. Some of my favorite memories are simply sitting with him while he told stories—some of which were probably exaggerated just a little. 😄 This song is about all of those memories: driving mountain roads, fishing, hunting, ATVs, road trips, his endless stories, the lessons he taught me, and the things he left behind that can never really disappear.
