The Piano Sonata No. 7, Op. 64, subtitled "Messe Blanche" (White Mass), was written by Alexander Scriabin between 1911 and 1912. The White Mass is closely related to its predecessor, the Sixth Sonata, sharing more structural and stylistic commonalities than any other pair of Scriabin sonatas. Scriabin famously feared the Sixth Sonata, viewing it as corrupted by demonic forces and refusing to perform it in public. He composed his Seventh Sonata as a holy exorcism against that darkness, subtitling it "White Mass" to reflect its celestial, ecstatic nature, evoking images of winged flight, voluptuous rapture, and overwhelming cosmic forces. The composer was especially fond of the piece due to its messianic context and perfected structure, which features far greater rhythmic and dynamic contrast than most of his output. ABOUT THE PROJECT: I created this typeset as preparation for an upcoming orchestral project. With its violent contrasts, complex counterpoint and advanced harmonies this piece provides incredible material for a full orchestra arrangement. Plus, it gives me the perfect excuse to finally feature actual orchestral bells! Given the massive scope of the sonata, completing the full arrangement will take some time, but I wanted to share this initial preparation phase.
