He claimed that Satan appeared to him and offered power in exchange for his loyalty. He described a supernatural woman of extraordinary beauty who remained with him for years, only for her true nature to eventually be revealed. She was not human. She was a demon. To the people of sixteenth-century Europe, this was not simply a story of temptation. It belonged to a much larger world of beliefs surrounding witchcraft, demonic pacts, incubi and succubi, possession, sorcery, and the Devil's ability to corrupt the human soul. And according to Peter's confession, his relationship with the demon was only the beginning. He claimed that Satan eventually gave him a garment capable of transforming him into a monstrous wolf—a creature driven by bloodlust and violence. But could the Devil really transform a man into a beast? This question divided some of the most influential demonologists of the age. Jean Bodin and Henri Boguet were two of them. Both men believed in the reality of Satan, witchcraft, and demonic activity. They simply disagreed about what the Devil was capable of doing.
