🌅 Budapest Before Sunrise – Was the Climb Worth It? Join me for an early morning adventure in Budapest as I set off in the darkness, walking past the beautiful Central Market Hall and crossing Liberty Bridge before making my way up Gellért Hill to the Citadella. With the city still waking up, it was time for a fast and tiring hike up the hill, climbing the steps and pushing on towards the top before sunrise. It certainly wasn’t the easiest start to the morning, but sometimes you have to put in a little effort to experience something special! And was it worth it? Absolutely! 😍 As the sun began to rise over Budapest, the views from the top were amazing and genuinely breathtaking. Watching the sky turn orange as the first light appeared over the city made the climb worthwhile, offering a completely different perspective of a place I never get tired of exploring. 🏛️ A little history of Gellért Hill Gellért Hill rises approximately 235 metres above sea level on the Buda side of Budapest, overlooking the Danube and providing some of the most spectacular panoramic views of the Hungarian capital. The hill is named after Saint Gerard (Gellért), a Christian missionary associated with the early history of Hungary. At the summit stands the Citadella, a fortress built by the Habsburg authorities between 1850 and 1854, following the Hungarian Revolution of 1848–49. Rather than simply defending the city against outside enemies, it was also intended to keep the population under control, with its guns overlooking Budapest. Today, the hill is better known for its walking paths, historic surroundings and incredible views across the Danube, Parliament, Buda Castle and the city skyline. The Liberty Statue, which stands above the city, has become one of Budapest’s best-known landmarks. For me, this is another example of why I love exploring Budapest on foot. You discover places at your own pace, experience the city before the crowds arrive, and sometimes find that the most memorable moments come after a tiring walk.
