I Have Committed Many Sins, Can I Repent? - Sheikh Sulaiman Ar-Ruhaily

A questioner asked, "How can I forget the past, with all the sins and forbidden things I have committed? I now deeply regret all of it." Sheikh Sulaiman bin Salimullah Ar-Ruhaily answers by explaining that every child of Adam is prone to mistakes, and sin is something common to human beings. However, the best of humans are those who turn back in repentance to Allah ﷻ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that the best of those who err are those who repent. Allah ﷻ has given glad tidings to His servants who have transgressed against themselves — not to despair of the mercy of Allah, for Allah forgives all sins for whoever repents, no matter how great the sin may be, including polytheism (shirk) if one genuinely repents from it. The Sheikh emphasized: do not carry the burden of worrying about forgiveness — because forgiveness is the affair of Allah, the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful. What we must focus on is the repentance itself: stopping the sin, feeling remorse for it, resolving never to return to it, and restoring the rights of others (if any) or asking for their forgiveness. For those who have fulfilled these conditions of repentance, the Sheikh reminds them to rejoice — because repentance wipes away what came before it, remorse itself is part of repentance, and the one who repents from sin is like one who has no sin. He also advised that Satan should not be allowed to exploit the memory of past sins to make a person despair of Allah's mercy, become grieved, or turn away from Him.
