A machinist heats a bracket to make a bend, while another heats a selected steel surface before quenching. Both operations use heat, but they do not have the same material requirements, temperature control or intended result. Confusing the purposes can leave a bracket brittle or a wear surface inadequately hardened. This lesson connects material identity, heat-treatment selection, controlled oxy-fuel equipment and verification. It then develops an original bend-allowance example. The equipment sketches explain relationships; actual operating settings and treatment cycles come from the specified material, approved process and exact equipment instructions.
Moving diagrams, worked examples and separate practice answers for Machinist learners.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
• Select and distinguish normalizing, annealing, hardening, tempering and selective surface treatment for a specified material and requirement.
• Explain controlled oxy-fuel setup, gas-path compatibility, heating, abnormal response and shutdown responsibilities.
• Calculate an original bend allowance and tangent-based flat length and explain restraint, heating choice and springback.
• Interpret original process and hardness evidence and plan verification of final properties, shape and condition.
