The history of the Americas goes back thousands of years, to the time of the Ice Age. During this period, groups of hunters from Siberia migrated eastward and eventually reached Alaska and Canada by crossing a natural land bridge that once connected Siberia and North America across the Bering Strait. For more than ten thousand years, these lands remained largely unknown to the wider world. Much later, during what became known as the Age of Exploration, European kingdoms began searching for new territories, trade routes, and opportunities across the seas. This period gained momentum after the fall of Constantinople in 1453, which disrupted important trade routes between Europe and Asia. Among the explorers of this era was Christopher Columbus. Columbus traveled to Spain and approached the Spanish monarchs, King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella I, with a bold proposal. He wanted to sail westward across the Atlantic in search of a route to Cipango, believed to be Japan, and Cathay, or China. The Spanish monarchs eventually agreed to support his expedition. In 1492, Columbus set sail across the Atlantic, believing he could reach Asia by traveling west. Instead, his voyage brought him to lands unknown to Europeans at the time, opening a new chapter in world history and beginning centuries of European exploration and colonization in the Americas. #history #historyofusa
