This is part 2 of a 3-part series. To start at the beginning, go here: • Juicy Easing & Tweening System for GameMak...
I AM BACK! Yes, I finally found the time to make another tutorial and boy, this is an extensive one!
You likely have seen the video "Juice it or Loose it" by grapefrukt. It's kind of a must-see for every aspiring gamedev. However, they don't go into too much detail there. The only advice they give is to use value += (target_value - value) * .1 for a generic easing effect. This might work for a couple of things but not in every scenario. So I wrote this, my own tweening system for my own game project in order to be able to tween any variable I want and I am using it a lot in my game. It is a fire and forget approach, meaning you call the tween_ext() script with the required parameters, tell what the end value should be and how long it should take. Presto!
However, there are a few things I want to point out:
0) After the last video, I received feedback that code was hard to read due to the resolution. I really took this to heart and went out of my way while editing to make everything readable. Please let me know if this works for you or not. Thanks!
1) While editing, I feel that I didn't emphasize enough that you can tween ANYTHING (that is not a bool) - not just movement but anything. Alpha values. Sound volume values. Brightness and saturation values. Anything. Use your imagination as a game maker!
2) This video is a snapshot of how things are before the release of GMS 2.3. This upcoming update will introduce a couple of changes such as structs, which I will likely use to build upon and improve this system. I will make a video on this once GMS 2.3 is out as a regular release (I don't want to bother with beta software).
3) YouTube is a hobby for which I don't have much time, sadly. Hence, my production quality is not where I would like it to be in comparison to the big ones. I KNOW my lighting could be better but damn, those Elgato Key Lights are expensive! Also, I KNOW that my sound could be better - I will invest into a Cloudlifter Mic Preamp soon.
