In this episode I answer a practical design question in oud building:
How do I derive the inner oud bowl profile from the outer template?
I continue from Episode 6, where the outer bowl profile was established. Although the inner profile was shown on my template in Episode 6, I did not explain how it was created. In this episode, I now show you using controlled offsets and practical geometry how to generate the inner curve accurately.
I explain compound curves and the difference between tangent and normal offsets, then demonstrate how I use different tools in the workshop to approximate and refine the inner profile. This includes a custom offset gauge that I designed and built with a thin fence, a standard marking gauge, and dividers, along with a comparison of how each behaves in real layout work.
The key point is that the tool only gives a starting approximation. Final accuracy comes from verification: checking against the centerline with a straightedge, measuring relationships with dividers from the outer curve, and then refining locally.
Final fairing is done using a French curve where needed, but most importantly through visual judgment and tactile checking to ensure the curve is smooth, continuous, and balanced.
This is a practical, workshop-based approach to oud bowl geometry rather than an abstract mathematical one. The goal is a reliable inner profile that matches the outer template in a controlled and repeatable way.
