Nigeria's House of Representatives has pledged stronger oversight to ensure a consistent supply of crude oil to local refineries and protect critical petroleum infrastructure. Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), Ikenga Ugochinyere, says lawmakers are working with regulators to increase national fuel sufficiency from more than 25 days to 45 days this quarter. The committee also plans to strengthen domestic refining, reduce dependence on imported petroleum products and improve national energy security. According to the committee, Nigerian refineries received 97.4% of their allocated crude oil volumes under the Domestic Crude Supply Obligation in the second quarter of 2026, while locally sourced crude accounted for more than 80% of refinery receipts between January and September. The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission also reports that domestic refineries received more than 127 million barrels of Nigerian crude and condensate during the nine-month period. Can sustained crude supplies improve fuel availability and strengthen Nigeria's refining industry?
