Airline: SkyHarbor Regional Flight: 294 Aircraft: Saab 340 Registration: WI-SHR7314 From: Yeager Krakabloa Airport To: Wright Isles Airport Passengers: 18 Crew: 3 Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 19 Survivors: 23 Captain: William G. Anderson First Officer: Adrian S. Carterson On a dark evening, SkyHarbor Regional Flight 294 departed Wright Isles Airport bound for Yeager Krakabloa Airport. The aircraft was a Saab 340, registration WI-SHR7314, carrying 18 passengers and 3 crew members. The outbound flight was uneventful. Nothing suggested that the aircraft or its crew were heading toward a serious incident. Later that evening, Flight 294 began its return journey to Wright Isles Airport. But conditions had changed. It was now dark, and the airport's Instrument Landing System (ILS) was out of service. Without the ILS to provide its usual electronic guidance, the crew had to conduct the approach using other available references. As Flight 294 descended toward the runway, the approach became increasingly challenging. The Saab 340 crossed the runway threshold and touched down hard. The aircraft struck the runway at an estimated vertical descent rate of -1,380 feet per minute—far beyond what would be considered a normal landing. The impact placed enormous loads on the aircraft. Then came the critical moment. The right engine struck the asphalt runway, causing severe damage. The engine was effectively shattered by the impact, leaving the Saab 340 badly damaged on the right side. Despite the violent landing, the aircraft remained under control and came to a stop. Emergency crews rushed toward the aircraft. Inside were 21 people. For a moment, the outcome of the accident was uncertain. But remarkably, everyone had survived. All 18 passengers and 3 crew members escaped the aircraft, with only minor injuries reported. Investigators would later focus on the final approach, the nighttime conditions, the unavailable ILS system, and the extremely hard touchdown. What initially appeared to be a routine return to Wright Isles Airport had ended with SkyHarbor Regional Flight 294 suffering major aircraft damage—but no fatalities.
