That beaked mask is unforgettable. The work behind it was a day of sick calls, uncertain diagnoses, quarantine decisions, hospital visits, and trying to help with limited medical knowledge. Follow a composite plague medical worker through Rome during the 1656–57 outbreak.
This video is a historical reconstruction, not the diary of one named physician. The iconic beaked costume belongs to the early modern period and was never worn by every plague doctor. It was not used during the fourteenth-century Black Death.
