Afghan medical student Asma Khan was born and educated in Pakistan. Now in the fourth year of her MBBS degree, she says a sudden directive threatened to end her education and send her to Afghanistan, a country where women are barred from pursuing higher education. In this episode of Rights Watch, Asma describes the moment Afghan medical students were allegedly given just 24 hours to vacate their hostels, the long delays in obtaining visas, and the uncertainty facing students enrolled through scholarships and refugee quota seats. She also explains why returning to Afghanistan could permanently end the education of female students, how deported students can become trapped across the border, and what the crisis has done to students preparing for their medical examinations. The Lahore High Court suspended the PMDC directives for the petitioners and allowed them to continue their studies, sit examinations and return to their hostels. The suspension was subsequently extended, but the students’ wider legal and immigration status remains unresolved.
