碓氷峠 群馬県観光 The Usui Pass, is located in the Gunma Prefecture about 172 km or 2.30 minutes from Tokyo by car. The Usui Pass railway link was built to overcome the natural obstacles of mountains and valleys between these two towns, so a series of 26 tunnels and 18 viaducts were built over the entire 11 km section of the line. The Usui Pass finally closed in 1997 after the Hokuriku shinkansen line was completed. Today the Usui Pass operates as a 6 km long walking and cycling trail which provides for a historic look into Japans technical prowess and modernisation’s efforts of the past.
