Off-Road, Beach & Towing TEST - BYD SHARK PHEV!

No low range, no transfer case and 2.7 tonnes on soft sand at high tide. Jesse Gleeson tests the plug-in hybrid dual cab on a beach, a rock step and 1.6 tonnes of camper between Sydney and Newcastle. Jesse Gleeson gets hold of a BYD Shark 6: $62k driveaway, 321kW and 650Nm out of two electric motors, a 1.5L turbo petrol running mostly as a generator, and a claimed 800km range. What it doesn't have is a transfer case, low range or diff locks. What it has instead is multi-terrain traction control, and the whole point of this one is finding out whether that's enough. It runs 0–100 in 5.7 seconds, two tenths quicker than the petrol Ranger Raptor, and the traction control walks it up a loose incline in Mountain mode when Eco mode wouldn't. On the hoist the bash plate sits below the chassis rails with the battery behind it, the rear is double wishbone independent instead of leaf, and approach and departure are 31° and 19.3° with a 17° ramp-over. Then a rock step stops it dead at full throttle, with no torque to crawl and nothing to drop into. On the beach at 14psi it floats over the ruts and drives past bogged 4WDs, right up until a turn on a steep bank at high tide sits it on the chassis.
