She Cared for Everyone Else. He Was the First to Ask Who Cared for Her. - Even Through Fire

She has sat with grieving mothers, frightened firefighters, and terrified spouses through the worst moments of their lives. In eight years as a hospital chaplain, Elena Marsh has never once been at a loss for what to offer. She knows how to hold space, how to listen, how to be present in the fire. What she doesn't know is how to let anyone do it for her. When a massive wildfire tears through the Lolo National Forest and sends wave after wave of injured firefighters to Providence St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula, Montana, Elena's reserves run dry in ways she can no longer hide. Then Wade Falconer arrives on the sixth floor — a Hotshot crew leader with sixteen years in these mountains, recovering from smoke inhalation with the easy calm of a man who has learned to trust what he cannot control. He watches her redirect every personal question with practiced grace. Then he asks the one thing no one has thought to ask in eight years: Who takes care of the chaplain? Set against the smoke-filtered light of a Montana wildfire summer, the Clark Fork River, and the mountains that hold Missoula like cupped hands, Even Through Fire is a story about what it costs to give everything — and what it means to finally receive.
