Scream Inception: Fandoms, Requels, and Meta Franchises

What’s your favorite scary movie? 🎬 This week, we're peeling back the layers of a literal cinematic nesting doll to unpack the absolute genius of the Scream franchise. We’re starting at the absolute outer layer with a tragic real-world copycat case from 2006 in Pocatello, Idaho, where two teenagers caught on tape that they wanted to direct a real-life horror production. Then, we are rewinding the tape straight into the franchise itself. From the original 1996 classic to Stab (the ultimate movie-within-a-movie), all the way through the modern era of Scream VI and Scream 7, we're tracing how every single Ghostface motive shifted from simple revenge to toxic internet fandoms and corporate "requels." Finally, we look at the real-life genesis of the fear: the 1990 Gainesville Ripper case that paralyzed a young Kevin Williamson and sparked the script that changed horror forever. Plus, I’ve got some wild production fun facts you’ve probably never heard, a quick status check on Scream 8, and my personal watch recommendations for spooky season.
